Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set up lock screen timers?

To get your Toggl timer on the lock screen:

  • Install the Toggl Lockscreen Widget app on your iPhone.
  • Open the app and log in with your Toggl Track account.
  • Start a timer in Toggl Track (on web or in their app).
  • Open Toggl Lockscreen Widget once after starting the timer so iOS can create the Live Activity.

After that first setup on a device, new running timers will start a Live Activity on your lock screen (and Dynamic Island on supported phones) automatically.

Do I need to add a widget manually?

No. Toggl Lockscreen Widget uses an iOS Live Activity, not a traditional manual widget. You don’t have to long‑press the lock screen or pick a size.

As long as you’re logged in and have opened the app once after starting a timer, iOS will show the running timer automatically on the lock screen.

My timer isn’t showing on the lock screen. What should I do?

Check these common issues:

  • You’re logged in inside Toggl Lockscreen Widget.
  • You started a timer in the same Toggl Track workspace you connected in the app.
  • After starting the timer, you opened the Toggl Lockscreen Widget app once (so it can send the Live Activity token).
  • In iOS Settings → Notifications → Toggl Lockscreen Widget, Live Activities are allowed.

If you recently reinstalled the app or switched devices, open the app once after starting a timer to re‑establish the Live Activity connection.

What happens when I stop a timer?

When you stop a timer in Toggl Track, the lock screen Live Activity is updated one last time and then ends. The timer disappears from the lock screen instead of lingering in a stale state.

The next time you start a new timer, a fresh Live Activity will appear without you needing to add or remove any widgets.

Do I need a Toggl Track account?

Yes, you need a Toggl Track account (free or paid). Toggl Lockscreen Widget simply shows and controls timers from your existing Toggl Track workspace.

You can sign up at track.toggl.com if you don't have an account yet.

How often does the lock screen update?

When a timer starts or stops, we receive a webhook from Toggl Track and send a push to your device almost instantly. iOS then keeps the Live Activity’s elapsed time updated on the lock screen for you.

In normal conditions, changes on the web (start/stop) should reflect on the lock screen within a few seconds.

Is my data secure?

Yes. Your Toggl API token is stored securely on your device using iOS Keychain. For lock screen updates, an encrypted copy is stored on our servers so we can update your Live Activity when you start or stop timers from the web—we use it only for that.

All communication with Toggl’s API and with Apple’s push services is encrypted. For more details, see our Privacy Policy.
